Effects of Norepinephrine, Epinephrine and Serotonin on the Phagocytic Function of theReticulo-endothelial System in the Normal and Splenctomized Rats

Abstract
To investigate the role of spleen in the actions of the norepinephrine, epinephrine and serotonin on the reticulo-endothelial function, the phagocytic activity was assessed by means of carbon clearance method after these amines were injected into the normal and splenectomized rats. The results were as folleows ;
1. In the normal and splenectomized rat administerd with physiologic saline, There was no significant chlange in the phagocytic activity in comparison with that of tie normal rats.
2. In the normal rats injected with norepinephrine, epinephrine and serotonin, phagocytic activity was increased significantly as compared with that of the normal rats.
3. Compared wit¢¥s phagocytic activity of the normal rats, in the splenectomized rats injected with norepinephrinc, epinephrine and. serotonin, phagocytic activity was incr¡©eased significantly. In the norepinepine treated group, phagocytic_ activity shows more marked increase than other groups.
These results suggest that the action of norepinephrine, epinephrine and serotonin, which increased reticuloendothelial function was not due to secondary effect of the endocrine or splenic control but due to direct action of these amines on the reticuloendothelial cells.
